“The sight of the first woman in the minimal two-piece was as explosive as the detonation of the atomic bomb by the U.S. at Bikini Island in the Marshall Isles, hence the naming of the bikini.”–Tom Waits
In this series, photographer Jamie Nelson uses the female form to explore the explosive and multi-faceted nature of the bikini.
In the 1930’s, the separated two-piece swimsuit was introduced featuring conservative skirts or shorts paired with a cropped top, vigilantly covering the navel.
In 1946, French designer Louis Reard created the controversial “world’s smallest bathing suit”—a scant 30 inches of fabric consisting of two inverted triangles connected by string. He named his design after the Bikini Atoll, where the post-war tests of the atomic bomb were conducted at that time. The iconic bikini grew to symbolize female liberation—despite its initial backlash.
Nelson, known for her highly sensual images, creates a sense of freedom reminiscent of a bygone era. She dazzles the viewer with exotic locations, graphic tan-lines, and sparkly adornments—reimagining the story of the bikini bombshell.
As a female photographer, Nelson’s intimate approach empowers her bikini bombshells—unveiling the archetype of the self-assured, strong woman. With her vibrant use of color and graphic compositions, the artist elicits an incendiary reaction to the female gaze.
